The Main Types of Bets
Australian sportsbooks share a common vocabulary. Learning the labels helps you compare markets without mixing different kinds of risk.
Singles
A single is one selection on one market. If it settles as a winner at the taken price, the return is stake multiplied by the decimal (or the equivalent in other formats). If it loses, the stake is gone. Singles keep variance visible because only one result decides the ticket.
They suit bettors who want to follow a clear idea — a match winner, a handicap line, or a total — without chaining extra conditions that can void the whole return.
Multiples and same-game multis
A multiple (parlay) combines several legs. Every leg must win for a return, so the published price grows while the chance of a full settlement falls. Same-game multis package correlated selections from one match; operators may price them with different margins than independent multis.
Treat multiples as higher-variance entertainment. A single near-miss can settle the entire ticket at zero even when most legs looked solid for most of the night.
Handicaps and lines
Handicap markets assign a points or goals offset so favourites and underdogs meet on a more balanced line. Asian handicap variants can include quarter-lines that split stakes across two settlements. Always read whether the line includes overtime or extra time for that sport.
A “short” handicap favourite still loses your stake if the margin of victory does not cover the line. The handicap is a pricing tool, not a cushion that removes risk.
Totals, props, and futures
Totals (over/under) ask whether combined scoring clears a published number. Player props focus on individual stats — tries, shots, disposals — and often void or re-settle if a player does not start, depending on house rules.
Futures stretch across a season or tournament. Prices move for months, and early tickets can look attractive long before squads, injuries, and draws are known. Long horizons do not make outcomes more controllable.
Choosing a type that fits the moment
Match the bet type to how much of the event you can actually follow. If you will only glance at a final score, a simple match result may be clearer than a multi-leg prop chain. If you are watching live, confirm that the market you want is still open and that you understand suspension rules.
Whatever type you choose, stake only what you can afford to lose, and remember that no format converts sports betting into an income plan or a way to repair earlier losses.
